Archetypes, Stats, and Influences - 08/11/2006

Character Stats have a large impact on how combat and Abilities work in the game. Each Ability is made up of many Attributes, setting things like the amount of damage it causes or how long its effect lasts. These Attributes can be modified by what we call "Influences".

Archetype Bonus Penalty
Detached Spectator +3 Perception -3 Focus
Devoted Ascetic +3 Belief -3 Vitality
Fanatic Self Improver +3 Vitality -3 Belief
Inquisitive Genius +3 Reason -3 Belief
Lunatic Fringe +3 Belief -3 Reason
New Age Hippy +3 Focus -3 Reason
Secluded Introvert +3 Focus -3 Perception
Suspicious Cynic +3 Perception -3 Belief
Troubled Intellectual +3 Reason -3 Focus
True Believer +3 Belief -3 Perception

Character Archetypes and Stats
When you create a character, you will be asked to select a character Archetype. These Archetypes not only add some flavor to your character's story, but grant bonuses and penalties to your character's initial Stats.

Your five character Stats (Focus, Perception, Reason, Belief, and Vitality) give you bonuses based on their scores. Each Stat has a number of Influences associated with it, which tell you what bonuses raising that Stat will give you. This table shows Stat adjustments based on each character Archetype.

For point a Stat is above 5, you get a +2% bonus to each Influence under that Stat. You get one point to add to any Stat each time you go up a level.

Attributes and Influences
Attributes are associated with Abilities and are expressed in numbers. Each Ability is made up of several Attributes, such as Melee Damage and Area of Effect.

Each Influence carries the same name as the Attribute it gives a bonus to. Influences are expressed as percentages that modify the Attribute when an Ability is activated. This table lists what Influence bonuses are affected by character Stats.

Keep in mind that Abilities can have positive or negative Attribute numbers--upgrade Abilities (buffs) have positive numbers while downgrade Abilities (debuffs) have negative numbers. Influence bonuses increase the size of the upgrade or downgrade.

Putting it All Together
Here's an example that should help you understand how this all works. We'll see how scores in two different Stats can change the effect of a single Ability.

Ability: Despoiler
Despoiler is an area-effect viral attack that reduces the melee damage, ballistic damage, melee accuracy, and ballistic accuracy of enemies near your target.

Attributes:

  • Melee Damage: -14 points, 20 seconds (Stat: Focus)
  • Ballistic Damage: -14 points, 20 seconds (Stat: Belief)
  • Melee Accuracy: -39 points, 20 seconds (Stat: Focus)
  • Ballistic Accuracy: -39 points, 20 seconds (Stat: Belief)

Now, let's say you had scores of 15 in Focus and 20 in Belief. That translates to a +20% bonus from Focus Influences and a +30% bonus from Belief Influences. Focus has both Ballistic Accuracy and Melee Damage Influences, while Belief has a Melee Accuracy Influence.

Your use of the Despoiler Ability would now look like this:

  • Melee Damage: -16 points, 20 seconds
  • Ballistic Damage: -14 points, 20 seconds
  • Melee Accuracy: -50 points, 20 seconds
  • Ballistic Accuracy: -46 points, 20 seconds

Note: When calculating the percent bonuses, the game truncates any decimals.

Now, if we reverse the scores to 20 Focus and 15 Belief, Despoiler would look like this:

  • Melee Damage: -18 points, 20 seconds
  • Ballistic Damage: -14 points, 20 seconds
  • Melee Accuracy: -46 points, 20 seconds
  • Ballistic Accuracy: -50 points, 20 seconds

Stat Bonuses
While the above is an example of how Influences affect the Attributes of an Ability you use on someone else, they also affect Attributes that are inherent to your character. For example, combat Styles are essentially Abilities that give buffs to your character. When you have an active combat Style, any Influence bonuses you have based on your Stats will be applied to matching Attributes of that Style.

Let's look at the same example using Self Defense.

Ability: Self Defense
Self Defense is the basic combat Style granted by every player's Awakened Ability.

Attributes:

  • Ballistic Accuracy: +1/level (Stat: Focus)
  • Ballistic Defense: +0.96/level (Stat: Perception)
  • Ballistic Damage: 2+0.2/level (Stat: Perception)
  • Melee Accuracy: +1/level (Stat: Belief)
  • Melee Defense: +0.96/level (Stat: Focus)
  • Melee Damage: 4+0.42/level (Stat: Focus)
  • Thrown Defense: +0.96/level (Stat: Reason)
  • Viral Defense: +0.96/level (Stat: Belief)

You'll notice that the Attributes of Self Defense are based on the level of the Ability. So, let's say you have Self Defense at level 20. That would make your base Attributes:

  • Ballistic Accuracy: +20
  • Ballistic Defense: +19
  • Ballistic Damage: 6
  • Melee Accuracy: +20
  • Melee Defense: +19
  • Melee Damage: 12
  • Thrown Defense: +19
  • Viral Defense: +19

Let's assume again that you have 15 Focus (+20%) and 20 Belief (+30%). (To keep things simple, we'll leave your Perception and Reason at 6, granting no bonuses.) Focus has Ballistic Accuracy, Melee Damage, and Melee Defense Influences, while Belief has Melee Accuracy and Viral Defense Influences.

Applying these bonuses to the appropriate Attributes results in the following:

  • Ballistic Accuracy: +24
  • Ballistic Defense: +19
  • Ballistic Damage: 6
  • Melee Accuracy: +26
  • Melee Defense: +22
  • Melee Damage: 14
  • Thrown Defense: +19
  • Viral Defense: +24
